Setting up your Ledger hardware wallet is your first crucial step to securely store and manage your cryptocurrency assets offline. This guide simplifies the process using official tools and the Ledger Live app for a safe, smooth start.
"Your crypto security begins with Ledger — offline keys, certified technology, and easy management in one app."
Step 1: Unboxing and Initial Device Setup
When you receive your Ledger device (Nano S, Nano S Plus, Nano X, or Ledger Stax), ensure the packaging is sealed and intact. Inside the box, you’ll find your Ledger wallet, a USB cable, recovery sheets, and a quick start guide.
Connect the device to your computer via USB. The device powers on automatically, displaying the Ledger logo. Follow on-device instructions to start, including choosing a PIN between 4 to 8 digits, which protects access.
Step 2: Download and Install Ledger Live
Ledger Live is your companion application available at Ledger.com/start for desktop and mobile devices. Download the version compatible with your operating system — Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, or Android.
After installation, open Ledger Live and connect your Ledger hardware wallet. Follow the on-screen prompts to pair your device and update the firmware if required.
Step 3: Secure Your Recovery Phrase
The device generates a unique 24-word recovery phrase during setup. This phrase is the key to recover your cryptocurrencies if the device is lost or damaged.
Write this phrase carefully on the supplied recovery sheets and store it somewhere safe and offline. Never share your recovery phrase with anyone or store it digitally.
Step 4: Add Cryptocurrency Accounts
Using Ledger Live, add accounts for cryptocurrencies you want to manage. Navigate to the "Accounts" tab, click "Add account," select the currency, and synchronize your device.
You can add multiple accounts for different coins and tokens, customize account names, and view portfolio balances in real time.
Step 5: Manage Your Crypto Assets Safely
Send, receive, buy, sell, swap, and stake cryptocurrencies directly from Ledger Live using your hardware wallet. Transactions require confirmation on the physical device, keeping private keys offline and secure.
Regularly update your Ledger Live app and device firmware to benefit from security improvements.
